CBSE Introduces New AI Curriculum in Schools: A Big Shift in Indian Education

In a major update to India’s national education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum for students from class 6 onwards. The announcement came yesterday during a press briefing by the Ministry of Education, and it marks a significant step forward in integrating technology-focused education into early academic life.
The curriculum, developed in collaboration with industry leaders like IBM, Microsoft, and Google India, will focus on basic AI principles, machine learning, and real-world applications like AI in healthcare, agriculture, and smart cities. Officials say the initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes skill-based learning and digital readiness.
According to CBSE, the course will start as a pilot in over 500 schools from the 2025–2026 academic session. Students will begin with theoretical fundamentals, gradually progressing to practical hands-on projects using AI tools and cloud-based platforms. Teachers selected for the program have already undergone a week-long training on the AI modules.
Education experts have praised the move, calling it timely and necessary. Dr. Neelima Joshi, a professor at Delhi University, said: “Introducing AI early helps students build curiosity and innovation skills. It prepares them for a future where technology will play a central role in every profession.”
Parents and students have also expressed excitement, especially those with aspirations in tech, data science, and engineering. “I’m thrilled that my child will learn AI at this age,” said Meena Kapoor, a parent in Lucknow. “This gives our kids a real competitive edge.”
However, some challenges remain. Not all schools, especially those in rural areas, have the infrastructure or resources to deliver technology-intensive programs. CBSE has assured that support will be extended to such schools via online modules and digital kits.
The move also aims to promote responsible and ethical AI use. Students will be taught how to identify AI biases, respect user privacy, and understand the importance of fairness and accountability in algorithms.
In addition to AI, CBSE is also reviewing its computer science syllabus to include topics like coding with Python, robotics basics, and cybersecurity.
The broader goal is to make Indian students global tech leaders of tomorrow by equipping them early with the tools and thinking frameworks needed in the 21st century.
This curriculum change, announced yesterday (May 25, 2025), has sparked a wave of excitement across educational circles, setting a strong precedent for other boards and institutions to follow.
